The New African Look
The African women are so beautiful and we love that they can carry so much and such heavy items on their heads. We see them with baskets full of fruit, water jugs, and just about everything else balanced so precisely on their heads. It's amazing. And they are so graceful! I decided I wanted to learn how to do that, but when I ask members or investigators how to do it, they just laugh and say that I am too old! I think not! So I decided to try it. I didn't do well with apples that rolled around in in the basket, but did just fine with bananas. Books were a little heavy and I have to admit, my neck was a little stiff and tired after trying for awhile. I guess I need to build up my muscles. Carrying things like this would really help my posture and back muscles.
African women wear these beautiful chitenges as skirts and aprons to protect their clothes. The chatenge is just an oblong (maybe 5 foot) piece of cloth that they wrap around themselves and then tuck in the end to keep it up. I wanted to wear one, but was afraid it would come untucked and fall down, so I decided I would make a skirt out of it. I put a simple casing in the top and then made a drawstring while trying to keep the wraparound look. I think they turned out rather well. And now I have something besides brown, black and blue skirts to wear!
